The first grade has been learning about masks from around the world. they are making masks that are inspired by the Georgia artist Kimmy Cantrell . He creates beautiful ceramic masks.
After learning about masks from around the world the students design their masks using geometric and organic shapes shapes. The next step is to make the mask out of clay. First the students flatten the clay with the palm of their hand and then roll the clay to make it even. Using a skewer the students cut the shape of the face and the facial features out of the clay.
Using the slip and score technique they attach the facial features.
Bone dry work is fired and then painted. It is so amazing to watch the students take a drawing and bring it to life with clay! All of their drawings look so much like their finished piece.
